DAY 59 BEAGLE BAY – MIDDLE LAGOON

27 April 2008

DAY 59 Pilbara – Kimberley Trip

BEAGLE BAY – MIDDLE LAGOON

We woke early today. The church bells rang at 6:30 am and then at 6:50 am before the 7:00am Mass. The area still looked very empty. We had three priests hold Mass – you would not see that in the east. One of the priests is retired and has stayed within the community and is referred to as a hermit. The other was a resident priest and someone who had come to relieve him whilst he had been away. After church we were shown a lovely grotto that has been built close to the school. We were told that Sr Bernadette who had recently passed away loved to come to the grotto. Apparently she was a French nun and was quite old when the local Bishop decided to send her back to France. She did not want to leave so after going back organised her own way back to the community and stayed here till the end. The Bishop has a lot of power according to the locals in the community and I am sure he would not have been impressed by her return.

After Mass, inspired by an idea during the service, hubby found a way to bleed the breaks without a hose and they seem to be sort of okay.

It hit us again this morning that Beagle Bay is a beautifully looked after place. The locals have pride in the surroundings they have created for their homes.

We packed up and thanked our hosts before making our way to Middle Lagoon run by a local indigenous family. It is a very well looked after camp spot along a nice part of the coast. Many people come here to fish. We spent a relaxing day here and as it is croc free we were able to go for a swim. The beach part was lovely.

It was interesting watching the waves roll in. After dinner we got our cards and had several games of canasta.
