DAY 13 FROM SOUTH TO NORTH - TOP END (NORTHERN TERRITORY) TRIP

7 May 2010

ANTIKOOLIRRINNA WATERHOLE – DALHOUSIE SPRINGS

The highlight of the trip to Dalhousie was seeing the Eringa waterhole

and ruins.

I wandered who lived here and why they left.

The well laid out garden bed

near the house stumps suggests that people cared for their special patch.

We took the track via Blood Creek Bore. It varied from lush greens to gibber plains.

The road was okay but had quite a bit of water in places. A detour gave warning not to go ahead along the road even though it may look okay at first.  Somewhere along here the hubs were engaged in case we needed the 4WD capability.

Pools of water were frequently present either by the side of the road or on the road itself.

We finally hit the last intersection before our destination.

The last 35km were the worst. The corrugations were bad. Only before the end did they peter out. It was a relief to eventually get into Dalhousie. Not too many here today. As one cannot get through to Birdsville over the Simpson they tend to go out for several days to do a loop and came back in. Both groups were made up of men only.

After a dip in the springs tasks that needed doing were attended to – universal joints were greased, recalcitrant fly screen fixed, visors were tightened, barbecue gas pipe cleared, washing done and a fly screen for the door was made. We radioed in to say where we were and then enjoyed the rest of the afternoon.
